About Land-based Learning

Land-based learning offers an opportunity to transform how we understand education, knowledge, and our relationship with place. It is important to also distinguish what authentic land-based learning is, differentiating it from outdoor education approaches. Maclane works with schools, organizations, and communities to develop land-based learning experiences that are grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and responsive to local lands, histories, and relationships.

Offerings

Offerings can include professional learning, curriculum development, land-based program design, workshops, and experiential learning opportunities. Drawing on Indigenous scholarship, land as teacher, and relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community, Maclane supports educators and organizations in moving beyond simply learning about the land or learning outdoors, toward developing meaningful relationships with land. Each offering is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of the organization while creating opportunities for learners to develop connection, responsibility, reciprocity, and a deeper sense of belonging to place.
